Originating in the royal courts of Awadh under Empress Noor Jahan, Lucknow Chikankari is an ethereal needlework craft requiring weeks of meditative patience by master women artisans. Each stitch carries poetic meaning:
Stitched on the reverse of sheer muslin or georgette to create an ethereal shadow glow on the front.
Raised knot stitches resembling millet seeds, clustered to form flower centers with tactile depth.
Pure metallic silver and gold threads flattened with cowrie shells to recreate starlight on fabric.
Delicate geometric net patterns created by separating thread fibers without cutting the cloth.
